Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some general questions our customers ask. If your question is not on here, please call for assistance. Furthermore, let us know if there are any other questions that we could add.

What is a wall bed?

A wall bed, also known as a murphy bed, is any type of bed that folds up into a recessed space or cabinet. The two most common styles are the panel and bifold door style wall bed.

What is a panel style wall bed?

A panel style wall bed has panels attached to the bottom of the bed frame, which are used as a decorative front when the bed is in the stored position and used as support when the bed is lowered.

What is a bifold door style wall bed?

A bifold door style wall bed is a frame inside a cabinet or recessed space with bifold doors (similar to closet doors). The doors are opened and then the bed is pulled down.

Why a wall bed?

A wall bed is a standard bed that folds up to save room space. It uses a regular mattress, the same as on a regular bed. Therefore, the comfort level is in your mattress. There are no uncomfortable bars like in a sofa bed. The wall bed can be used any place that you want to have an additional bed, but don’t want to take up room space. Many customers even use the wall bed as their own bed for every night sleep.

Who are our customers?

Everyone is our customer. Everyone could use more space, and that is what we provide. More precisely though, our clients are hotels/resorts, apartment management companies, hospital sleep labs, healthcare and assisted living facilities, retirement communities, colleges and universities, fire departments, interior designers, builders and contractors, and individual home owners.

What finishes can I get a wall bed in?

In the Melamine Laminate series, the beds and cabinetry are offered in these standard finishes: white, almond, mahogany, natural oak, chocolate, sunset maple and sunrise maple. All other colors require an upcharge. In the Natural Wood and wood veneer series, we will custom manufacture the wall bed system to match almost any finish or style of your decor.

What is wall bed cabinetry made of?

Our economical melamine beds, as well as our raised panel melamine beds, are made from melamine laminate. Our Natural Wood and wood veneer beds have Natural Wood raised panel fronts or wood veneer flat fronts and wood veneer sides. The wood veneer and laminates is a thin layer over pressed board or plywood.

Do I need a special mattress?

No! Any standard mattress up to 9” thick will work in the wall bed system. We can add the mattress to your unit or you can supply your own. For mattresses between 9” and 12” thick, you just need to modify your cabinet depth. No box spring is used on the units, so a good innerspring mattress is recommended. (Mattress for king size can only be 9” or less.)

Are wall beds easy to raise & lower?

YES they are. Our eight gauge, high tension spring-operated mechanism, makes lowering and raising the bed effortless. Furthermore, our mechanisms are manufactured to balance at any position when raised and lowered to prevent the bed from continuing downwards onto children and adults.

Can a wall bed bed fold up with me in it?

NO! Unlike the movies and shows you might have seen in the past, our beds will not fold up with you them.

Can I purchase only the parts I need?

YES you can! All our components are available separately. You can choose from just a mechanism to a whole custom unit. Choose the wall bed that suits your family needs today and be assured that you can add to it in the future. Customize to your heart's content!

What is the lead time for getting my wall bed?

Our standard quoted lead time is 2-3 weeks or less for frames and flat panel melamine cabinetry. Most of the frames are in stock and can be shipped in days. Raised panel laminates and all of the Natural Wood and wood veneer series have a 6-14 week lead time depending on quantities, finishes, etc. Please call 419-229-5399 or E-mail at sales@wallbedsmfg.com for lead time quotes.

How are wall beds shipped?

All wall beds are shipped from our factory in Lima, Ohio. Most small orders are shipped via common carrier. Shipping charges are additional and depend on the location and how much is ordered. Please call for a quote. The common carrier will deliver to most locations in the United States right to your home (back of the truck delivery). We also offer delivery on our company truck. Charges are per mile from Ohio.

How will my wall bed arrive?

If shipping by common carrier, the frames and melamine units will arrive unassembled in boxes. The Natural Wood and wood veneer units must be crated in plywood containers for shipping purposes. If we deliver on our company truck the units will blanket wrapped.

How difficult is it to install a wall bed?

The installation of a wall bed can be done by most anyone. Written instructions are provided and a detailed step-by-step video is available. A complete bed unit shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours. Each side cabinet will take 1-2 hours using normal household tools.

What tools do I need to install a bed and cabinetry myself?

Normal household tools.

How do wall beds attach? Floors/walls?

The bifold door style frame is attached to your floor (wood or concrete). The panel style frame is attached to the cabinetry and that is all attached to studs in your wall. We advise that you anchor all of the cabinetry (bed and side cabinets) to the wall, through the studs, with the brackets provided.

What warranties does Wall Bed Manufacturing offer?

Wall Bed Manufacturing offers the best warranties in the business. We have a Lifetime Warranty on our spring-operated mechanism, and a Ten Year Warranty on all cabinetry, foundations, and bedding.

How do I pay for my bed?

You can pay for the bed by cash, check, or money order.

Why is there no pricing on the website?

The configurations of the wall beds as shown on the website are just some examples of how the units can be placed. We manufacture each unit as ordered because of the many different sizes, finishes, and configurations. Our customers are unique in their space saving needs and wants. Every unit can be customized to your room layout. Please give us a call at 419-229-5399 or E-mail at sales@wallbedsmfg.com. Our sales team will work with you to configure the perfect wall bed and cabinetry to meet your space saving needs.

If I send you a drawing, will Wallbeds Manufacturing draw me out a plan?

YES, we can do that. It is a free service that we offer. Send your drawing via E-mail at sales@wallbedmfg.com or fax 419-222-5841.

Are there any dealerships?

For the most part, we deal directly from our manufacturing facility in Ohio. However, some dealerships are available in certain areas. Please call for information. We always welcome new dealers.
